Until 2009, the longest dice roll by one person in the of casino gambling was recorded at two hours and 44 minutes. This occurred 15 years ago at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. Then, on May 23, 2009, in the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City, a woman broke that record by holding the dice for an incredible four hours and 18 minutes.
I was in the Borgata that night playing craps. Unfortunately, I was not at her table. That Saturday I stopped playing around 7 p.m. and was on my way to diner. I passed a table and saw a woman rolling the dice. The table was packed and surrounded by spectators. I dismissed the event as just another hot roll with the typical yelling and screaming.
After dinner, I returned to the casino. When I approached that same table, I saw a crowd now four deep behind the players. I could see the same woman shooting the dice that I had seen about an hour and a half earlier. I left the area and went to another table where I resumed playing. Meanwhile, the woman kept rolling for another two hours, bringing her total rolling time to over four hours! The women won only $1700 for the four-plus hours she held the dice. Needless to say, she was not an experienced craps player and was content with a conventional pass line bet and odds.
Since that day, I have gone over how I would have played at that same table. I even made a rough calculation of how much money I would have won. According to reports, the woman made an unbelievable 125 pass line wins. With 125 pass line wins, she would have averaged about five rolls between passes (625), for a total of about 750 rolls of the dice. About 14% of those rolls would have been craps and elevens, equaling about 100 rolls. She would have been left with about 525 payable numbers. Adding the 125 pass line wins to the 525 payable numbers gives 625 winning bets.
So, with a $2000 table limit on a $10 table, I calculated it would have taken about 300 numbers to reach the maximum bet of $2000 on all the numbers. My average payoff on $2000 place bets is about $3000 per roll. Therefore, 350 winning bets at $3000 per win are a little over $1.2 million. The 300 smaller wining bets I would have collected before I got to the max bet would have earned me another $300,000.
My final calculations revealed I would have earned about $1.5 million. Of course, the above calculations are not absolute. They are rough estimates but are entirely possible. Even if I allow my calculations to be off by 50%, I still would have won $750,000.
So be prepared. You never know when a hot roll can happen. And when it does, make it earn you a million!
